When the Next Coin in the Series is Issued, Production of the White Lion Will End and the Design Will be Retired

12:52 PM

The series commemorates the ten imposing statues that lined the entrance to Westminster Abbey in 1953 at the coronation of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. The statues were of the heraldic beasts - ancient symbols of power representing noble families and houses in the Queen's line of ancestors.

The White Lion of Mortimer links Queen Elizabeth to King Edward IV. The coin's reverse shows the Lion clutching a shield emblazoned with a white rose encircled by a golden sun - the ‘white rose en soleil’. The same symbols appear on Great Seals of Edward IV and Richard III, as well as George VI.
