The Cumberland Island National Seashore includes 9,886 acres of protected wilderness on Georgia's southernmost barrier island. Accessible by ferry only, the park includes sandy beaches and dunes, marshes along with a number of historic sites - including buildings. The island's fascinating, and sometimes terrible, history includes Native Americans, missionaries and African slaves.
No more than 300 visitors are allowed on Cumberland Island at a time. They may see wild horses which descended from stock brought originally by Spanish missionaries in the 1500s. The shoreline there is also prime for nesting loggerhead sea turtles from May through October.
